
A Postdoctoral Research Associate Position (PDRA) is available from 1st November 2023 for 24 months with a possible 12 month extension to carry out research for a fully jointly funded cyber-security for UK future sustainable energy network by Scottish Power Energy Network (SPEN) and National Grid (NG). The aims of Cyber-SAFEN project is to investigate suitable methods of essential cyber safe and resilient functions and develop an integrated cyber Intrusion Response Defence System (IRDS) for UK electricity networks Protection Automation Control (PAC) systems, Wide Area Monitoring (WAM) PAC systems and SCADA systems against advanced cyber-attacks, and to accelerate the UK confidently moving to low carbon economy.
The work will focus on:
• Research on new emerging techniques and processes to manage security risks by deploying cyber security protection, detection, respond/defence strategies and restore methods for UK energy network cyber-physical system,
• Application of international standards to achieve required cyber security targets,
• Development of advanced cyber intrusion response/defence solutions and resilience strategies to protect UK future active and flexible energy System networks against ad-vanced cyber-attacks,
• Demonstrate and performance evaluation of Cyber-SAFEN solutions.
The work will be carried out at the University of Manchester’s RTDS Simulator laboratory and use a real time (RT) hardware-in-loop (HIL) Virtual Site Acceptance Testing and Training (VSATT) platform to demonstrate Cyber-SAFEN solutions that should be able to distinguish between equipment failure, plant faults, extreme weather impacts and cyber-attacks.
Applicants should hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualification in computer science or tele-communication or electrical power systems engineering. Expertise in power system Protection and Control, substation digitisation, real-time hardware testing, computer science and soft-ware development are desirable for this interdisciplinary research project.
The successful candidate should have a proven ability to work independently, strong data analysis and computer programming skills and present results in an effective manner. Good written and oral communication skills are also essential.
