The School of Arts, Language and Cultures at the University of Manchester invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, temporary teaching-focused Lectureship in Discourse Analysis and Stylistics.
You will convene and teach (on campus) one second year (L2) course unit in computationally aided register/genre/style analysis ("Stylistics of English", ca. 60 students), for which materials exist. The unit is offered as part of the single honours Undergraduate programmes in Linguistics and English Language and joint honours programmes with either of these subjects. You will be expected to teach all lectures and seminars, to set assessment, to undertake the marking, and to update existing course materials and a virtual learning environment on Blackboard. You will hold two office hours per week, and answer student queries by email and on the course units’ discussion board.
You will also co-convene and co-teach – together with an experienced colleague – on a combined final year (L3) / PGT course unit on Forensic Linguistics (ca. 60 students), for which all course materials exist, and complete part of the marking for this course unit.
In January 2025, you will also mark the coursework and exam for a combined final year (L3) / PGT course unit "Discourse as social practice" (ca. 58 UG and 10 PGT students). Detailed information on learning outcomes and marking rubrics exist.
You will be expected to hold minor departmental administrative roles, act as academic advisor to ca. 20 undergraduate students, contribute to the supervision of MA or MSc dissertations in your area of expertise, and undertake some second marking for other course units as required by the department.
For further details about the above courses and other tasks, you can email.
