Job Description

Applications are invited for a fully-funded three-year Post-Doctoral scholarship in the fields of urban and regional economics and economic geography. The Sir Terry Leahy Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship is offered by the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, and is provided in recognition of the generous philanthropy by world-renowned business leader Sir Terry Leahy, whose financial gift to the University of Manchester is intended to spur research into the fortunes of UK cities and regions, and especially the UK’s economically weaker cities and regions which have suffered a lack of investment over decades.

The candidate will be expected to have a PhD in relevant fields of either economics, geography, economic development, planning, engineering, or public policy. Quantitative skills will be regarded as being advantageous, and a mix of quantitative and qualitative skills will be highly valued. The key issue for consideration will be how the candidate’s qualifications and subjects studied link to the ideas being proposed in the candidate’s research proposal.

The application must be accompanied by a detailed research plan of 2500-3000 words (exclusive of references) which will provide the objectives, logic and structure of the research work of the Fellow during the following three years. The research plan could consist of extensions to the PhD research already undertaken by the candidate, or alternatively could be based on a different set of themes. Importantly, the proposed research programme of the Fellow must constitute a coherent three-year research agenda.

Candidates currently in the university or research arena will be very welcome. In addition to an academic track-record, applications from candidates who have spent some time in a professional setting, such as in government, in commerce or industry, in think-tanks, or as university researchers, will also be welcome.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
