Job Description

Commercial Development Manager (Life Sciences)

In the Commercial Development Team, we work closely with the academic inventors to translate their groundbreaking research into commercially viable propositions that have a clear potential to create a real-world impact.

We manage a diverse portfolio of projects, facilitate IP protection, and work collaboratively with our colleagues in the Innovation Discovery and Investment & Licensing Teams to build commercially sounds business cases.

Role Summary

  • Work in close collaboration with the Innovation Discovery Team and the Investment & Licensing team.
  • Develop a package of information that can be used to produce commercially compelling business plans, valuations and partner due-diligence activities and present their findings for approval at stage gate 2.
  • Responsible for communicating with the inventors the analysis and decisions made in the Innovation Factory about invention. This will be done with support from the Innovation Discovery Team.

Key objectives and responsibilities of the role include:

  • Building strong, collaborative relationships with academic inventors, colleagues and both internal, and external stakeholders.
  • Managing a portfolio of commercial projects, prioritising tasks, tracking progress, and reporting outcomes.
  • Critical assessment of technology, unmet need, value proposition, competitive landscape and market opportunity.
  • Leading market research, IP and commercial due diligence to ensure market fit and appropriate IP protection.
  • Development of commercial project plans, including identification of funding sources, industry / commercial partners, advisors and consultants.

The successful candidate will have the following essential skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Higher degree in life science (or equivalent) related subject.
  • Proven scientific and commercial experience gained within a life science sector.
  • Curious and up to date with innovative technology developments and market trends in the life science sector.
  • Analytical and detail orientated thinker, able to identify commercial potential and judge impact.
  • Used to manage multiple projects, deliver objectives and meet targets within agreed timelines.
  • Great interpersonal and stakeholder management skills – able to build strong and long-lasting collaborative relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A business or project management qualification is not essential, but would be advantageous.
