Job Description


Overall Purpose of the Job

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Technical Specialist in Geomicrobiology, within the Biophysical and Biochemical Sciences Platform, to join our dynamic Faculty Technical Operations team, which strives to provide a sector leading technical support for our students and staff. The purpose of this role is:

  • Managing equipment, and developing and continuously reviewing the provision of geomicrobiology and molecular ecology facilities in FSE, including but not exclusively the RADER, the Williamson Research Centre and the Geomicrobiology Research facility based in DEES.
  • Provision of specialist technical support and advanced training to staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and visitors in specialist geomicrobiology and molecular ecology techniques for the detection, isolation, quantification of complex and diverse environmental samples including those containing radioactive materials.
  • Design, develop and implement cutting edge geomicrobiology and molecular ecology techniques underpinning novel developments in environmental and technological microbiology.
  • Undertake research that utilises cutting edge geomicrobiology and Molecular Ecology technology, leading to high impact publications and outputs.
  • Proactively engage with all stakeholders internal and external to the university by building positive relationships to help drive successful outcomes.
  • Be responsible for local business improvement and change projects to continually improve the Sequencing and Bioinformatics services provision, maximise cost recovery, realise the potential financial benefits of working within a single scientific platform, and to strive for service excellence.
