Job Description

Advert for E-Learning Support Officer (AI and Digital Skills)

The University of Manchester Library is seeking an E-learning Support Officer (AI and Digital Skills) to join the Teaching, Learning and Students (TLS) team. The role will support the Library’s teaching and learning services and strengthen our work in digital skills, academic skills and information literacy.

About the Role

In this role, you will design and deliver teaching and learning materials that develop students’ academic and digital literacy skills, including guidance and support on the use of Generative AI in learning.

At interview, applicants will be expected to demonstrate their ability to design and develop effective online learning materials, their understanding of and approach to digital skills support and work as part of a collective within a collaborative culture, applying our inclusive and accessible teaching and learning principles.

You will:

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Library and the Teaching, Learning and Students (TLS) team - including librarians, learning developers, coordinators, and other subject matter experts to create engaging teaching materials for online and blended learning that support the Library’s teaching and learning service.
  • Work alongside colleagues and students from around the University to design and develop online learning resources, underpinned by a strong pedagogical understanding that specifically support digital literacy, including approaches to engaging with Generative AI within learning.
  • Support and encourage staff in the Library in applying their own understanding of pedagogy and student support to online and asynchronous learning.
  • Act as a link into the wider AI Transformation program for the Library, championing digital learning use cases and ideas for future AI pathfinder projects.
  • The role is predominantly campus based but there will be opportunity to work from home one day a week.

About the Teaching, Learning and Students Team

The team is part of the Library’s student-focused services and works alongside teams across the Library and wider University to deliver academic, information literacy and digital skills support, credit-bearing teaching and other strategic student support activities.

Recruitment Process

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, whether you already work in higher education or come from sectors such as education, student support or community services.

Every effort is made to make this process inclusive and accessible. If you require any additional reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process, please let us know.

  1. Shortlist

As a first element of the shortlisting process, we will assess candidate’s applications against the person specification in the job description.

To make the most effective use of your application, please clearly state what experience you have for each element of the person specification, doing your best to evidence all the essential knowledge, skills and experience.

Please include example(s) of your experience developing learning resources and your approach to designing them, where possible in relation to ‘digital skills’, and outline the pedagogical practices which underpin your work. Use the additional information section of the job application to provide written evidence or a portfolio of how you meet the criteria in the person specification.

  1. Interview

Our interview process will take place on one day and include two parts. The first will be a short question and answer session, where the candidate and panel will discuss the role, the candidate’s experience and the expertise they will bring to their work. All questions for this session will be shared in advance.

Shortly after the question and answer session, the candidates will be asked to take the panel through a set of no fewer than three and no more than five exemplars of their previous work in eLearning and discuss:

  • the approach they took to ensure what was created is inclusive and accessible
  • how they incorporated their own pedagogical expertise and that of subject matter experts into the resource.

This portion of the interview will not be focused on the details of each exemplar but on the breadth of your experience with developing the learning resources and on your articulation of your approach and pedagogical expertise.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading pension scheme.
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays.
