Applications are invited for the above post, to start in May 2026 for a fixed term of two years.
The successful applicant will work with Professor Malwina Luczak on on projects in the field of Applied Probability, connecting to her Leverhulme International Professorship.
Professor Luczak’s current research interests are largely in Markov chains, with an emphasis on rigorous analysis of their long-term behaviour, supported as appropriate by computational experiments. Professor Luczak has developed various mathematical techniques for studying the speed of convergence of Markov chains to stationarity as well as properties of the stationary distribution. The successful candidate will assist her in adapting these techniques to treat specific classes of Markov chains arising in application areas such as mathematical biology and computer science, as well as in verifying theoretical results by numerical work.
For instance, there are a number of stochastic models of epidemics where the course of the epidemic is known to follow the solution of a differential equation over short time-intervals, but where little or nothing has been proved about the long-term behaviour of the stochastic process.
There will also be opportunities for the post-holder to develop their own research agenda, and to work with others in the Department of Mathematics in Manchester.
Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Malwina Luczak (email: malwina.luczak@manchester.ac.uk).
