Job Description

The University of Manchester is seeking to appoint an Interim Director of Organisational Design and People Change to play a pivotal role in delivering large-scale transformation across one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities.

Acting as a senior strategic leader within the People Directorate, the Director will provide institutional leadership for organisational design, operating model transformation and people-centred change. The role will work closely with the Executive, senior leaders and governing bodies to ensure the University is equipped with the capability, capacity and culture required to deliver the Manchester 2035 Strategy.

The Role

You will lead the University’s approach to organisational design and people change, setting the strategic direction and driving delivery of complex, institution-wide transformation.

Acting as a trusted adviser to the Executive and senior leaders, you will shape operating models, workforce transformation and organisational effectiveness, ensuring all change is aligned, inclusive and legally robust.

You will oversee major change programmes, embedding consistent, people-centred approaches that enhance engagement, performance and organisational capability across Faculties and Professional Services.

Alongside this, you will build and lead a high-performing function, develop organisational capability, and foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and evidence-based decision-making. You will also play a key role in stakeholder engagement, including leading strategic relationships with Trade Unions and ensuring effective consultation on major change initiatives.

The Person

You will bring:

  • Expert knowledge of organisational design, operating models and large-scale people change
  • A deep understanding of employment legislation and governance relating to organisational change
  • Significant senior-level experience leading complex organisational and workforce transformation in large, matrixed organisations
  • A strong track record of advising Executive leadership teams and governing bodies
  • Experience of leading trade union consultation at scale
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at the most senior levels
  • Strong strategic and organisational judgement, with the ability to operate in complex and ambiguous environments
  • A commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and wellbeing

A degree in HR, organisational development, change or a related discipline is required. Chartered CIPD status or equivalent senior professional accreditation is essential.

Why Join Us

This is a rare opportunity to take on a senior leadership role at the heart of a globally significant university undergoing major transformation. You will play a central role in shaping the University’s future operating model and culture, supporting delivery of the Manchester 2035 Strategy through effective, inclusive and sustainable organisational change.

What will you get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
