Job Description

Background
The UK Rare Disease Research Platform was established in 2023 with £14 million investment from the NIHR and the MRC. The ELSI Node includes projects led by the University of Manchester, the University of Oxford and Cardiff University. The Manchester team is exploring impact and outcomes in rare conditions clinical trials, with a focus on ensuring that patient and family perspectives shape research and policy-relevant outcomes.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated researcher to contribute to the University of Manchester’s work within the MRC/NIHR ELSI Node. The postholder will support research focused on rare conditions clinical trials, including qualitative and mixed-methods research, engagement with patients, family members, public contributors and professionals, support for study recruitment, research ethics applications, and analysis of research data. The role will also contribute to patient and public involvement and engagement activity and help ensure that lived experience informs the direction and impact of the research.

About you

You will hold a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline, such as Genetic/Genomic Counselling, Genomic Medicine, Nursing, Psychology, Medical Sociology or the Social Sciences. You will have experience of working with patients, public contributors, or vulnerable and marginalised groups, and experience of qualitative research methods including interviewing and analysis. Strong communication, organisational and collaborative working skills are essential. A PhD/DPhil in a relevant area would be advantageous.

Appointment details

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 12 months, funded by the MRC/NIHR. The post is based on campus at the University of Manchester and requires regular in-person attendance. It is not available on a part-time or hybrid basis.
