Research Technician

We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as a Research Technician within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. This role offers an exciting opportunity to support cutting‑edge research in the Federici Laboratory, which investigates bacteriophage–bacteria interactions at mucosal surfaces and their implications for infection, inflammation and antimicrobial resistance.

The Federici laboratory is part of the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation, providing a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment with access to state‑of‑the‑art facilities, including advanced animal, bioimaging, genomics and flow cytometry platforms.

This is a full‑time, fixed‑term post for 12 months, starting in August 2026, based at the University of Manchester.

You will be responsible for:

• Supporting pilot and main research projects through the organisation, execution and troubleshooting of laboratory experiments
• Analysing and presenting research data for inclusion in publications and presentations
• Providing training, supervision and advice to staff and students on experimental protocols, equipment use and safe working practices
• Managing the safe and efficient operation of laboratory areas, including stock control and procurement of consumables
• Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety, data protection and relevant legislation, including preparation of risk assessments

About You
We encourage applications from individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. You should demonstrate:

Essential Criteria

• A qualification at QCF Level 6 in a relevant biological science discipline, or equivalent laboratory experience
• Extensive laboratory experience in microbiology and/or immunology, including specialised techniques
• Experience working with mouse models and holding a Home Office licence (or eligibility to obtain one)
• Experience with immunological techniques such as flow cytometry, qPCR, cell culture, western blotting and ELISA
• Strong organisational, communication and independent working skills

Desirable Criteria

• Knowledge of gut or lung infection biology
• Experience in bacteriophage research
• Experience using RStudio, GraphPad Prism and standard office software
