Job Description


This is an outstanding opportunity for a Research Associate with expertise in pre-clinical in-vivo cerebrovascular imaging, vascular physiology or neurovascular coupling to join the Microvascular@Manchester group under the supervision of Adam Greenstein, Ingo Schiessl, Kira Shaw and Harry Pritchard. The post holder will be based within the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences and the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre at the University of Manchester.

The position is funded through the Manchester NaVigate Partnership, a major collaborative programme investigating how impaired cerebral blood flow contributes to cognitive decline and dementia. The project will determine how vascular amyloid-β(1-40) alters vascular smooth muscle calcium signaling, arterial constriction and cerebral blood flow, and whether these mechanisms can be targeted therapeutically.

The successful candidate will lead studies using state-of-the-art pre- clinical in vivo imaging approaches, including multiphoton microscopy and optical imaging methods, to assess pial artery function, vascular smooth muscle calcium signaling and cerebral blood flow in mouse models relevant to Alzheimer’s disease. Complementary approaches will include behavioural assessment, histology, immunohistochemistry and physiological analysis.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and highly motivated researcher to lead an exciting translational project within a multidisciplinary academic-industry collaboration. The ideal candidate will have strong experimental and analytical skills, experience in preclinical vascular imaging, and a passion for understanding mechanisms underlying neurovascular dysfunction in dementia. The successful applicant will have opportunities to publish, present internationally, develop collaborations and contribute to future grant applications within The University of Manchester.
