Job Description

BHF Manchester Centre of Research Excellence Kusuma Fellowship in Cardiology

The British Heart Foundation Manchester Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) drives forward world-leading cardiovascular research through interdisciplinary collaboration. Our mission is to address the global challenges of cardiovascular disease by developing innovative approaches to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. By integrating expertise across cardiovascular science, data science, AI, and clinical research, we enable high-impact discoveries in areas such as cardiovascular genomics, heart failure, and inflammatory mechanisms of disease.

The CRE benefits from strong collaborations with Manchester’s health innovation ecosystem. We aim to inspire the next generation of researchers, empower career development, and create a sustainable future for cardiovascular research with a focus on diverse, equitable, and inclusive research practices.

About the Fellowship

We are seeking outstanding candidates for a three-year BHF CRE Kusuma Fellowship in Cardiology. This Fellowship provides dedicated support for clinical or non-clinical researchers to progress toward establishing an independent research programme in the cardiovascular field. Proposed research must align with one or more of the five BHF Manchester CRE Research Themes:

  • Cardiovascular Genomics and Development
  • Heart Failure
  • Cardiovascular/Cerebrovascular Inflammation
  • Data Science
  • Computational Cardiovascular Medicine

In addition, research proposals must align with the strategic interests of the Kusuma Trust. The Trust is particularly interested in projects addressing heart failure after MI (myocardial infarction) for any age - although the research sample should also include some patients under the age of 60.

Proposals focused on clinical training or on pharmacological interventions in heart failure are not eligible.

We welcome applicants at any stage following completion of a PhD (or research MD for clinical candidates). Fellows will receive mentorship from senior CRE investigators aligned with their chosen Theme. We have an excellent track record of success in developing both clinical and non-clinical colleagues to their scientific independence.

The Fellowship has been provisionally funded through the generosity of the Kusuma Trust and includes support for research consumables.

Application Process

Please note that this role involves a two-stage application process:

  1. Stage 1 – University of Manchester Review:
Applications and research proposals will be assessed by BHF Manchester CRE panel. Successful candidates will be invited to interview.
  2. Stage 2 – Kusuma Trust Review:
Candidates who progress beyond the interview will have their proposals submitted to the Kusuma Trust for final evaluation and confirmation. Progression from Stage 1 does not guarantee success at Stage 2.
