Job Description

The Manchester Institute of Education is seeking to appoint an experienced and inspirational English teacher and teacher educator.

In summary, you will be required to:

  • lead, design, teach and evaluate the primary PGCE English curriculum
  • assess trainees’ English subject knowledge and pedagogical skills for teaching primary English through audits, observations of trainees’ teaching on school placements and assessments.
  • design and lead Intensive Training and Practice (ITAP) models for an aspect of English teaching at university and in schools (as specified by the DfE market review and accreditation guidance.
  • work collegially with the Primary PGCE teacher-educator team
  • liaise with partnership schools, train mentors and contribute to developing our public engagement agenda (including recruitment)
  • provide pastoral and academic support to students
  • be student-facing in the role all-year-round (including during school placements)
  • mark M Level assignments as part of the PGCE marking team

Enthusiasm for teaching, a positive attitude towards change, flexibility in working patterns and a willingness to travel to any school in the partnership are essential requirements of this role.

A BEd/ PGCE qualification with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) (or equivalent qualification)  is essential, together with recent, relevant and substantial experience of teaching/working in a primary school as an English subject leader at a senior leader level (in the last three years[1]) and/ or experience in Initial Teacher Education of teaching English to trainee teachers. A further academic degree such as a Masters’ Qualification or PhD and/or NPQ professional qualifications is desirable, and a willingness to gain a Masters’ and/or PhD is essential.  ​​​​​​​
