Job Description

A postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for an outstanding and ambitious Biochemist or Biological Chemist to join a multidisciplinary team of scientists working as part of the EU FP7 GlycoBioM project, Tools for the identification and detection of biomarkers in clinical samples and patients (European Union Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2011-2015, grant agreement n°259869). GlycoBioM is a Collaborative FP7 project, including partners from 6 different institutions in 5 European countries (http://glycobiom.eu/). The University of Manchester’s project is focused on the development of glycol-arrays as multimodal tools for the identification of new carbohydrate-binding proteins and application of these tools for biomarker discovery.

You should have a PhD or equivalent in Biochemistry or Biological Chemistry with a proven track record in enzyme discovery/characterisation/purification and protein engineering. The project will involve a considerable amount of enzymology and mass spectrometry. Expertise in protein expression and purification is essential. Experience using MALDI-Tof Mass Spectrometry and knowledge of the glycol-sciences are advantageous.  You should be capable of working under your own initiative but also collaborating with research partners in both Manchester and project partners across Europe, so excellent communication and organisational skills are also required.
