
The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures at the University of Manchester invites applications for a full-time chair post in Modern British History within the Department of History, tenable from 4/9/2023.
This key appointment will provide strategic leadership and vision in a highly successful Department ranked 5th in REF 2021 (GPA 3.5) which has a profile of nearly fifty internationally acclaimed researchers and teachers and a strong record of attracting external research funding. The new chair will play a critical role in the development of Modern British History nationally and globally, as well as within the Faculty of Humanities at Manchester. The successful applicant will be an outstanding researcher with considerable experience of teaching and supervision and will join a department with a thriving community of postdoctoral, postgraduate and undergraduate students.
Applications are sought from candidates who have a proven international reputation in any area of the cultural, political, social and economic history of modern Britain and its relationship to the wider world. Candidates with expertise in any area of Modern British History are encouraged to apply but we particularly welcome applications that map onto one or more of the following History research groups: Race, Roots and Resistance; the Centre for the Cultural History of War; Embodied Emotions; Politics, Institutions and Policy.
