Automation Engineer (DevOps)

About IT Services

IT Services at the University of Manchester is a vibrant and fast-moving department, we focus on delivering excellent customer service and quality services for our staff, students and researchers. 

The Team

The role is within the Automation engineering team, which is a key an instrumental to support and deliver cloud migration programmes across the UOM.

Our platform engineers design, build and maintain the delivery infrastructure, systems and processes underpinning technology transformation engagements and lead the adoption of modern platforms and ways of working.

The Role

We’re looking for senior and mid-level platform engineers, who are hands on and possess a deep understanding of the Azure ecosystem to join delivery teams working on some of the most exciting digital programmes within the education sector. The University has a clearly defined IT digital roadmap leading to 2024/2025. As an Azure expert, you'll work in small product teams alongside developers, architects, designers, analysts and product owners to deliver automation, tooling and cloud infrastructure.

You’ll have the expertise and confidence to lead the definition and support of the Azure delivery platform in complex engagements, typically working in multi-disciplinary teams.

For both roles, the successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate they can:

  • Design, build and maintain secure cloud infrastructure using Terraform, Ansible, OWASP and release pipelines using Jenkins, Azure DevOps
  • Deploy and monitor software and configuration changes with Ansible, Jfrog , AppD, Azure Monitor, etc.
  • Understand Microsoft Azure, ideally their Platform as a Service offerings (App Services, Azure SQL, Azure Search, KeyVault etc.), as well as Azure DevOps
  • Use Terraform templates scripting languages such as PowerShell or Python.
  • Build, manage and secure C# ASP.Net web applications and authentication flows, e.g. OAuth or SAML
  • Use Test-Driven Development and associated technologies such as NUnit, XUnit


For Senior role, the successful candidate should be able to demonstrate they can:

  • Use their extensive cloud experience to serve as a DevOps and Platform evangelist who educates development teams and other key stakeholders.
  • Serve as a coach and mentor to team colleagues and act as an internal consultant and advisor for other technical teams with relation to leveraging automation technologies.
  • Comfortable working in a highly visible and business-facing role where you need to break down complex problems, facilitate capturing requirements and provide creative solutions suitable to the stakeholder’s problem statement.
  • Demonstrate a passion for cloud engineering and eager to help shape an agile-minded cloud platform team ready for growth.
