Job Description

The University welcomes applications for a Professorship in Engineering Biology within the School of Engineering in areas relating to engineering biology, including biomedical, bioelectronics, and biomechanical systems, operating at the interfaces between engineering and biology, biotechnology, and healthcare.

Engineering systems for the biosciences, health and the environment are priority areas for the University. This strategy aligns with recent substantial investments including the Manchester Engineering Campus Development, which opened fully in 2022, the Pankhurst Institute for accelerating translation of healthcare technologies, and the Royce Institute which is the national research hub for Advanced Materials. Building these strengths across engineering disciplines, the University is seeking to recruit a research leader in Engineering Biology to augment our existing staff in delivering research and systems that operate at the interface between engineering and biology.

The appointment will complement current activities in bioelectronics, biomechanics, bioprocessing and intelligent microsystems that extend across a breadth of research areas. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will have expertise and will have a proven track record of achievement in the following research areas, including, but not restricted to:

  • Embedded electronics, mechatronics and smart systems, including machine learning;
  • Computational modelling, including of biomedical systems;
  • Biomechanics, including modelling and gait analyses;
  • Microengineering, communication, sensing, automation and actuation;
  • Engineering biology for environmental solutions;
  • Sustainable and renewable bio-manufacturing of products and materials for healthcare.

The research of the successful candidate may be at the fundamental stage or more translationally focused towards applications, but are expected to deliver world-leading research and clear pathways to impact. They will also make a substantial contribution to curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
