Job Description


The University of Manchester invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, fixed-term postdoctoral Research Associate post, tenable from 1 September 2023 until 31 August 2026. The successful candidate will be working directly with the Vice Dean and Head of the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities, primarily but not limited to developing research for a project on the formation of collective identities through music, with a focus on but not limited to the long 19th century.

The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:

  • Historical and analytical research on music, music culture and music aesthetics primarily of the long 19th century, with a working knowledge of earlier and later periods.
  • Administration of research projects
  • Editorial assistance including music typesetting, copyediting and indexing.

The successful candidate will work directly with the Vice Dean and Head of the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities. The Research Associate will undertake historical and analytical research based on primary and secondary sources, conduct literature and repertoire searches and compile bibliographies. Grant applications will be developed from this work, as will single- and co-authored publications. The Research Associate will also contribute to other related projects as required; they will also be given the opportunity to pursue their own research, mentored by Professor Schmidt.

The Research Associate will be formally located in the Music Department but will have access to the resources and teams from across the university.
