Job Description

Overall Purpose of the Job:

Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in 2D Heterostructure Spin Memory technology.

A postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) position is available for an outstanding scientist to undertake research in the field of two-dimensional (2D) materials spintronic devices, based on utilizing novel atomically 2D quantum materials and their heterostructures.

The successful applicant is expected to have a PhD or equivalent in physics, electronics, materials science or nanotechnology. Expertise in 2D materials transfer and device fabrication in a clean-room setting is essential. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and help manage a small research team, so excellent communication and organisation skills are also required.

The successful applicant will design and fabricate spintronic devices based on 2D materials heterostructures, combining 2D materials with spin-orbit coupling and room-temperature 2D ferromagnets, to develop an experimental prototype memory device based on the spin-orbit torque (SOT) mechanism. You will work predominantly in the clean rooms of the National Graphene Institute and in the Condensed Matter Physics Group laboratory in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The work will be developed within a Horizon Europe collaborative project.

What you will get in return:

Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
