Job Description

The University of Manchester invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a permanent, full-time Lecturer in Creative and Cultural Industries. The main duties of the role include:

  • Teaching, administration and management on the new BA programme in Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI)
  • Collaborating with colleagues in the Institute of Cultural Practices (ICP) on the development and teaching of the new MA CCI programme
  • Building a clear strategy in research and teaching in CCI, which supports synergies and collaboration across Art History and Cultural Practices (AHCP) and with our many external partners
  • Conducting research and publishing research outputs that reach international standards of academic excellence
  • Applying for external research grants
  • Supervising BA and MA dissertations, MA placements and PhD theses
  • Acting as academic advisor to students
  • Developing and maintaining collaborations with our world-class University cultural assets - including the Whitworth, the Manchester Museum, Jodrell Bank and the John Rylands Research Institute – and with existing and new external CCI partners, such as Media City and Factory.
  • Taking a full part in the life and administration in AHCP

The School operates a Work Allocation Model (WAM) that ensures parity of workloads. The duties of this post will conform to the expected teaching and administrative obligations for a full-time member of academic staff.

This appointment forms part of an exciting initiative to expand significantly the teaching provision of the department. Two new MA programmes launched in September 2023 in Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI), and in Digital Media, Culture and Society. The BA programme in CCI, with which the appointment will be primarily associated, will be launched in 2024. These complement the department’s successful suite of MA programmes (Arts Management, Policy and Practice; Art Gallery and Museum Studies; Heritage Studies) and BA programmes (Digital Humanities, Art History).

You will be highly motivated and familiar with the teaching and research cultures of the School. You will be part of the BA CCI programme, and contribute to teaching on existing and new MA and BA programmes within AHCP according to their area of expertise, as well as carrying out administrative roles and contribute fully to the life of the subject area. Your personal research will be supported with sabbatical leave and an annual research allowance. The post is available from 1st August 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
