IT Services at the University of Manchester is a vibrant and fast-moving department, we focus on delivering excellent customer service and quality services for our staff, students and researchers. 

The Team

The role is within the Platform engineering team, which is a key an instrumental to support and deliver cloud migration programmes across the UOM.

Our platform engineers design, build and maintain the delivery infrastructure, systems and processes underpinning technology transformation engagements and lead the adoption of modern platforms and ways of working.

The Role

We’re looking for senior and mid-level platform engineers, who are hands on and possess a deep understanding of the Azure ecosystem to join delivery teams working on some of the most exciting digital programmes within the education sector. The University has a clearly defined IT digital roadmap leading to 2024/2025. As an Azure expert, you'll work in small product teams alongside developers, architects, designers, analysts and product owners to deliver automation, tooling and cloud infrastructure.

The Person
You’ll have the expertise and confidence to lead the definition and support of the Azure, AWS and GCP delivery platform in complex engagements, typically working in multi-disciplinary teams.

For both roles, the successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate they can:

  • Familiarity with collaboration suites i.e. Atlassian products (Jira, Confluence)
  • Hands on with any of Azure, AWS or GCP Services
  • Automating cloud services
  • Exposure towards Infrastructure Management, Data Migration.
  • Scripting with one or more of the following: Powershell, Python
  • Identity & Access Management
  • Automating delivery of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) via Terraform.
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD pipeline
  • Code Repository Management (e.g. Gitlab, GitHub, Bitbucket)
  • Experience around infrastructure deployments and system distributions
  • Architecture experience around enterprise scale applications and distributed systems
  • DB Integrations
  • Has a DevOps mind-set towards Automation.
  • Understanding of Security Compliance

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with container technologies using Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with Cloud Best Practices, Cost Optimisation and Architecture
  • Automating configuration management Ansible.
  • Knowledge around Identity Management, DNS, SAML 2.0.

Successful candidate should be able to demonstrate they can:

  • Use their extensive cloud experience to serve as a DevOps and Platform evangelist who educates development teams and other key stakeholders.
  • Serve as a coach and mentor to team colleagues and act as an internal consultant and advisor for other technical teams with relation to leveraging automation technologies.
  • Comfortable working in a highly visible and business-facing role where you need to break down complex problems, facilitate capturing requirements and provide creative solutions suitable to the stakeholder’s problem statement.
  • Demonstrate a passion for cloud engineering and eager to help shape an agile-minded cloud platform team ready for growth.
