Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Senior Technical Specialist (Radio Antenna) to join an exciting new project to develop deployable low-frequency horn antennas for ground and space based applications. The goal of the project is to design, build, and characterise prototype antennas that can be folded into small, lightweight packages that can then be deployed using an automated origami/pop-up unfolding sequence. The horns are intended for use at ~100 MHz frequencies and above, for applications such as 21cm global signal experiments and future large lunar arrays, and will measure several metres in each dimension.

The primary purpose of the role is to lead a substantial portion of the technical development work, including modelling and building prototype hardware, and conducting field tests to characterise the antenna’s mechanical and electrical properties. The post holder will be embedded within the HERA Radio Cosmology group led by Dr Phil Bull at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, with support from technical staff at Jodrell Bank Observatory and international collaborators.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
