Job Description

The impact accelerator award (IAA) is to fund knowledge exchange (KE) activities to accelerate the impact of research. This scheme encourages initiatives that increase our engagement with commercial businesses. This job follows on from a successful ICP collaboration with a nuclear engineering company, MoltexFlex. This IAA will accelerate the deployment of new, highly innovative green nuclear technologies, and helps achieve the UKs 2050 net zero targets.

The MoltexFlex reactor design has been shown to be susceptible to salt impregnation of the graphite substructure, which will severely impact the fission reactor neutronics. This Proof-of-Concept project will combine the nuclear graphite knowledge, experience & facilities, utilizing previous coatings research (Non graphite), backed by a detailed literature survey, to design a range of innovative surface engineering treatments, previously not investigated for use within the nuclear sector. A graphite preparation plan will be developed for MoltexFlex to adopt and immerse in molten salt for approx. 4 weeks. After hot immersion, the design quality of the surface engineered graphites will be extensively characterized utilizing X-ray Computed Tomography and Mercury Porosimetery to assess their effectiveness as a barrier to molten salt permeation.
