Job Description

The Amazonian BioTechQuilombo project, funded by the Amazônia+10 program is a pioneering initiative to document and protect Amazonian biodiversity through collaborative research with traditional black communities in Brazil (Quilombos). This project involves the funding agencies UKRI (UK), SNSF (Switzerland), FAPESP (Brazil), FAPESPA (Brazil), FAPEAM (Brazil), FAPERR (Brazil), and CNPq (Brazil), more than 40 scientists and 10 Quilombola leaders.

By combining traditional knowledge with advanced biotechnological techniques—such as e-DNA analysis, remote sensing, and traditional survey methods—the project aims to assess biodiversity and address critical data gaps in key conservation areas. It also emphasizes capacity-building and knowledge exchange with community members to promote sustainable conservation practices.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute specifically to forest biodiversity measurement through the integration of conventional field census and remote sensing techniques (terrestrial and aerial laser scanning, and satellite images) to assess forest structural diversity and floristic composition while addressing critical conservation challenges.

Working closely with the leading researchers and the Quilombo communities, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will play a vital role in uniting traditional ecological knowledge with cutting-edge technologies to document biodiversity, evaluate forest health, and support sustainable conservation practices. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research that bridges community-based approaches and modern scientific methods.

Starting date is April 1st or as soon as possible after.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
