Job Description


We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as an Access Control Officer. This role offers an exciting opportunity to provide technical expertise in the configuration, operation, maintenance and development of access control systems across the University estate. You will support system improvement, integration activities and operational decision-making, contributing to the ongoing development and effectiveness of physical security systems.

You will be responsible for:

  • Take responsibility for the day-to-day operational performance of access control and alarm monitoring systems, ensuring reliability, availability and effectiveness.
  • Investigate, diagnose and resolve complex system faults, communication failures and hardware/software issues.
  • Configure and maintain system settings including access permissions, user profiles, schedules, door groups and time zones.
  • Analyse system logs, performance data and incident reports to identify patterns, root causes and potential security risks.
  • Provide specialist technical advice to staff, students and contractors on access control systems and processes.

About You

Essential Criteria:

  • Proven technical experience with access control systems (e.g. Schneider Security Expert, Salto Pro-Space, ASSA ARX or similar).
  • Strong understanding of access control system architecture, including controllers, networks and software platforms.
  • Ability to analyse complex technical issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement within defined procedures.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of installing, commissioning or upgrading access control or security systems.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts such as TCP/IP, VLANs and IP addressing.
  • Familiarity with Windows Server environments, Active Directory or SQL databases.
  • Experience of integrating access control systems with CCTV, alarm or building systems.
  • Awareness of cybersecurity principles relating to physical security systems.
