About This Role

This is a unique opportunity to be an integral part of a team leading a bold data transformation project for a large Russell Group university. Using The University of Manchester’s considerably large and diverse data sets and new technological capability, the team are developing new and innovative ways of using data to add value and enrich the experience of our students and provide powerful business intelligence to our staff. The University of Manchester has recently completed the installation of a cloud-based Data Lake using Cloudera Distribution for Hadoop (CDH) and Talend, with the ultimate aim of providing the university with data driven student support products and staff with dynamic management information. In order to support this platform there is a need to supplement the existing Analytics team in the Directorate of IT Services with an experienced Hadoop developer (preferably using CDH). The successful candidate will work within the team responsible for building and maintaining a Hadoop big data solution. This type of data project is unprecedented in the sector, with an ambition to create many UK University firsts, so we are looking for someone who wants to take the knowledge they have already gained in this area and grasp the opportunity to develop new business-focussed MI and BI solutions from the ground up, taking on design and development responsibilities.

Specific role requirements

The required skills for the role are:

  • Extensive experience in creating data pipelines and models for the purposes of analytics, including the definition of star schemas
  • Relevent experience of Hadoop components, specifically Sqoop, Hive, Spark and Impala
  • Relevent experience in the use of graphical ETL tools such as Talend and Informatica
  • Proven experience in one or more of Java, Python, R, and Scala
  • Extensive experience of SQL and SQL performance tuning
  • Experience of producing design documentation and specifications for data modelling and data transformation work

Ideally the successful candidate will also have experience of:

  • Exposure to Oracle Warehouse Builder and PL/SQL
  • An understanding of how to design and maintain Hadoop clusters with knowledge of Cloudera Manager or Ambari
  • Experience of data modelling toolsets such as Sparx EA
  • Experience of working in a dev/ops environment and experience of agile frameworks such as Scrum
  • Exposure to, or experience to, data mining and machine learning
  • Some experience of leading small teams.

Previous experience of working in a Higher Education environment would be a distinct advantage.
