The Herbert group seek two highly motivated scientists to join us studying the cellular basis of complex tissue formation, in particular the role cell shape and geometry play in directing cell mechanics, signalling and behaviour driving tissue morphogenesis.
Our latest Wellcome Trust-funded research aims to define:
(1) Novel mechanisms of cell shape control: Can subcellular targeting and translation of mRNAs drive local cell shape remodelling in cell migration? Does interphase cell geometry reshape the biomechanics of mitosis to induce asymmetric cell division?
(2) New roles for cell shape in defining cell function: Can post-mitotic cell geometry direct differential daughter cell fate? Does local cell shape remodelling polarise cells?
We employ a sophisticated multidisciplinary approach to investigate tissue formation, encompassing in-vivo genetic or live-imaging studies in zebrafish, in-vitro ‘omics’ or micropatterning approaches in human cells, in-silico modelling methods, CRIPSR gene-editing, and aim to extend these efforts to include optogenetic tools. Tissue models of interest include angiogenesis, neural crest, neural progenitors and cancer.
PhD-level experience in these areas is ideal, but applicants with similar interests and a strong track record in other cell and developmental biology fields are also actively encouraged. The position is available from 1st October 2020 and is tenable for at least 4.5 years. To learn more about the Herbert group, visit www.herbertlab.com.
