Job Description

Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in Software Engineering, within the team delivering Manchester’s contribution to the UK Institute of Coding.

The Institute of Coding (IoC) www.instituteofcoding.org is a national initiative bringing together a range of universities, industry, training providers and professional bodies to address the UK’s digital skills gap.  The Institute’s vision is to enhance the education and employability of every IoC learner, and ensure that employers and individuals across the UK can access the skills they need to compete in the global digital economy.

You will work alongside the IoC research team at the University of Manchester on our Git Workflows project.  This project aims to create a common framework for describing, analysing and creating Git workflows.  The framework is being used:

  • in the construction of a catalogue of existing workflows, showing their similarities and differences for easier comparison,
  • in the creation of tools to assist established software engineering teams in selecting and using Git workflows appropriately,
  • in the analysis of current practice with Git workflows, to understand how current software professionals are using (and misusing) Git workflows, and
  • in the development of improved materials for training and education in Git workflows.

The work of the team has so far been focussed on the creation and validation of the catalogue and framework.  Some of these results can be viewed at our Git Workflows Warehouse web site:   https://gitworkflows.cs.manchester.ac.uk/

The aim of this new post is to further develop the suite of tools based on the framework, and to embed these tools into our undergraduate software engineering teaching.  If successful, the results of the project will also be shared throughout the IoC consortium, and may be embedded in a new public MOOC on Git workflows, as well as being reported in the software engineering research literature.

You should have, or be working towards, a Ph.D. level qualification (or equivalent) or experience in software engineering, computer science or a related discipline.  You should be familiar with modern software engineering practice, specifically tools for collaborative team coding using Git, in addition to excellent problem solving and communication skills and a proven track record of research publication in reputable international venues.

The appointment will be in the Department of Computer Science in the Information Management Group, working with Dr Suzanne M. Embury.  The Department is among the largest in the UK, and has research and teaching profiles that are both broad and deep, reflecting critical mass both in core areas of the discipline and more specialised areas.  It was ranked 4th in overall GPA in REF 2014 and equal 1st for the quality of the research environment.

Further information about the Department of Computer Science can be found at http://www.manchester.ac.uk/cs, and details of our work for the Institute of Coding can be found at https://ioc.cs.manchester.ac.uk.

The Department of Computer Science is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting women’s careers in STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education. We particularly welcome applications from women and people from groups who are currently under-represented in Computer Science. The appointment will always be made on merit.
