A postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) position is available for an outstanding and ambitious materials scientist to undertake research in the field of graphene and 2-D materials nano-electro-mechanical (NEMS) devices, based on developing a novel transfer process to produce suspended membranes of 2-dimensional (2-D) materials and their heterostructures.
You should have, or be working towards, a PhD or equivalent in materials science, physics or nanotechnology. Expertise in 2-D materials transfer and device fabrication in a clean-room setting is essential. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and leading a small research team, so excellent communication and organisation skills are also required.
You will design, develop and implement a transfer system for 2-D materials such as graphene, and use it to produce suspended membranes of 2-D materials and their heterostructures. You will subsequently use these membranes to fabricate and characterise a range of nano-electro-mechanical (NEMS) devices. You will work predominantly in the clean rooms of the National Graphene Institute and in the Nanofunctional Materials Group laboratory in the Department of Materials. You will also work to undertake any knowledge transfer and exploitation of the developed technology in an industrial context.
The School is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting women’s careers in STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education.
