The University of Manchester seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Urban Design and is looking for applications from candidates who specialise in urban design practice and the delivery of urban design projects through a technical and applied studio-based approach. In particular, we seek candidates who can evidence a commitment to teaching/delivering contextually responsive urban design interventions at multiple scales, and who have skills in utilsing a wide range of urban design techniques and software in the development and delivery of design proposals. With an established urban design teaching team and postgraduate masters programme in place, as well as the recently launched Manchester Urban Design LAB [MUD-Lab], the successful candidate must have the ability to work collegially within this structure to deliver existing studio modules, assist in the design of new and innovative curriculum, and actively contribute to the MUD-Lab’s growing portfolio of activities and outputs.
The post involves teaching at both undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, potential supervision of students up to PhD level, as well as scholarship and administrative roles as specified by the Head of Department. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who can complement and develop the capacity of our existing research themes and expertise.

All candidates should include in their applications an Urban Design Portfolio. This portfolio should demonstrate your understanding of the process of urban design practice. It can include your own design work and/or student work you have directly supervised [Please be clear when using work that is not your own]. The portfolio should provide clear evidence of your technical skills [including applied urban design techniques, core design software, technical drawing, and hand/urban-sketching], urban design analysis, design development and proposals, visualization and presentation skills, and your commitment to contextually responsive design interventions across multiple scales in the built environment. It should be presented at A3 landscape format and be a maximum of 12 pages – It must not exceed a file size limit of 20MB. Please ensure you highlight your respective role in each project/page you present as part of the portfolio.
