We seek a skilled and experienced biochemist to join the Biomolecular Analysis Core Facility within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, The University of Manchester, one of the largest biomedical faculties in Europe. The position is part of an established core facility team and is primarily responsible for the selection of small-molecule targets (nanobodies) to cell matrix proteins using a yeast-display system. The primary focus of the role will be to establish the yeast-display library and a protocol for the rapid selection of nanobodies to multiple targets within the Wellcome Centre for Cell-Matrix Research. This is an exciting opportunity to work with several groups to design, select and develop these molecular tools and has the potential to generate high quality publishable data and to learn how to use multiple biophysical instruments within a core facility setting.
You will work within a diverse biophysics environment and will be required to become an expert in the field of antibody mimetic screening and in devising appropriate biophysical assays for selection of the appropriate molecules. You will be responsible for the selection process including target labelling strategies, library screening, nanobody cloning, purification, validation and selection of molecules with the desired characteristics using the suite of biophysical instrumentation within the core facility. You will be required to advise colleagues on appropriate experimental approaches and in the development of methods.
You will have a PhD in a relevant field such as biochemistry or biophysics (or equivalent) and have hands on experience of working with multiple biophysics instruments, cloning and cell-culture methods. Preferably you will have experience of yeast and/or E. coli cell culture methods, protein purification strategies and protein interaction technologies such as biolayer interferometry/SPR and/or microscale thermophoresis.
