
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher as part of the EPSRC funded project “MultiSense - Devising and Manufacturing mm-Wave High Data Rate Low Latency On-Skin Technologies” which aims to create new flexible electronics for high data rate on-body sensing situations. Unlike current wearables, which are based on Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), our new devices will mount the electronics on highly flexible substrates which are conformal with the skin, following all of its contours to get a better signal and longer lasting connection to the body. The project is highly multidisciplinary and involves working with materials scientists at the University of Manchester on printed manufacturing, sensor fabrication and antenna designers at the University of Kent, experts on manufacturing scale-up at the Centre for Process Innovation (https://www.uk-cpi.com/).
The current role focuses on the design and synthesis of polymers with: (i) embedded hydrophobic core structures capable of interacting with, and stabilizing, 2D-materials such as graphene; (ii) the synthesis of polymer networks which will also incorporate of structures capable of interacting with small molecules for use in the construction of wearable sensing devices. This position will ideally suit applicants with an interest in sensor technology and prior experience in the synthesis of functionalised polymers will be essential.
If appointed at Research Associate level you must possess a PhD (or equivalent), or be close to achieving the degree, in organic polymer synthesis and have an interest in organic electronics. Excellent oral and written communication skills will also be a requirement for the post.
