Job Description

Applications are sought for a 15 month EU ITN-funded Early Stage Researcher position with Rob Field’s group in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology.

The ESR will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop analysis tools with which to assess the structural biology of glycogen storage disease (GSD). These studies will begin in vitro and progress to cell-based studies; throughout, collaboration with cell biologists and medics across the ITN will be a key part of experiment design.

This project will provide an ambitious student, keen to work at the interface between biochemistry and biomedicine. Training will be provided in: the design and execution of enzyme synthetic routes in carbohydrate chemistry; carbohydrate purification, structural analysis and spectroscopic analysis techniques. Specifically, the student will devise ways to generate linear and branched glucan oligosaccharides, as low molecular weight analogies of native glycogen and variations thereof that are representative of GSDs. This is a challenge best tackled through combining the latest chemical and biochemical methods available. The novel glycogen materials developed will be integrated with fluorescent probes of glycogen dynamics and cell-based studies of glycogen metabolism.

As part of wider ITN training, the student will take part in one or more extended placements (4-6 weeks) at collaborator sites to gain insight into cell-based studies on glycogen metabolism (Groningen; Innsbruck), and the mathematical modelling thereof (Dusseldorf).

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments will be made on merit.
