The research of the Wedge lab is focused on Cancer Evolution and Heterogeneity. We analyse genomic and other data to characterise clonal and subclonal populations of cells within tumours. We have pioneered the development of computational methods to decompose DNA sequencing data and thereby generate genomic profiles of sub-populations within each tumour. We track the evolutionary trajectories of tumours and, by aggregating chronologies across thousands of tumours, are starting to discover common pathways to progression across multiple cancer types, including prostate, colorectal, lung, oesophageal, breast and haematological cancers. Through our research we aim to improve clinical practice by advancing our understanding of the processes and mechanisms involved in the progression of tumours from pre-malignant to aggressive, treatment-resistant and metastatic cancers. We are seeking a talented bioinformatician / data scientist to join a fast-growing group in Manchester.
The Manchester Cancer Research Centre is seeking a talented and ambitious bioinformatician or data scientist to join a research programme in Cancer Evolution and Heterogeneity. You will take a leading role within a research project within prostate cancer and be supported in your professional development.
In recent years, whole genome sequencing data from 1000s of cancers of many different tumour types have been compiled by large consortia. Working within the Pan Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-1907-7), Pan Prostate Cancer Group (https://panprostate.org/) and the 100,000 Genomes Project (https://www.genomicsengland.co.uk/), we are applying machine learning and statistical techniques to make novel discoveries across a wide range of cancer types, including prostate, colorectal, endometrial and testicular cancer. If appointed you will lead analysis of Whole Genome Sequencing data from the Pan Prostate Cancer Group (PPCG). This role includes extensive interaction with international collaborators, and good communication and team-working skills are therefore essential.
