A Research Associate position in theoretical cosmology is available in the cosmology group hosted at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. You will mainly work on theoretical studies of spectral distortions of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) as a novel probe of the early Universe and particle physics.
The University of Manchester hosts one of the largest Astrophysics groups in the UK, with strong involvement in several experiments (e.g., SKA, BINGO, DES, LSST, e-MERLIN, QUIJOTE). Most relevant to the position, the group is at the forefront of theoretical and experimental studies of the CMB. We were a major contributor to the past Planck satellite. We are directly involved in PIXIE and BISOU, which both target CMB spectral distortions. We furthermore have major involvement in several future CMB B-mode polarization experiments, including LiteBIRD and The Simons Observatory.
You will be an expert in theoretical cosmology, with experience in CMB physics and ideally CMB spectral distortions. You would work with a diverse team to study the formation of the CMB spectral distortions and how this can be used to learn about the early Universe and particle physics.
Knowledge and experience in aspect of theoretical cosmology and CMB spectral distortion physics are essential. You must also hold or be about to obtain a Ph.D or equivalent in a relevant field. You will have a demonstrable track record in communicating your research in both written and oral form. You should have a keen interest in working in a diverse team with various levels of experience and expertise. Scientific programming skills (e.g., C/C++, Python, Mathematica) and knowledge of relevant cosmology tools (e.g., CosmoMC, CAMB, CosmoRec) are important.
This position is funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant CMBSPEC and you are expected to contribute to the research activities of the CMBSPEC team.
