Job Description

The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) is an EPSRC-funded national institute. With its Hub at The University of Manchester, the Institute has spokes at nine Partner and Associate organisations: the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Cranfield, Oxford and Imperial College London, as well as at the UK Atomic Energy Authority and National Nuclear Laboratory. Royce, driven by a vision of ‘advanced materials for a sustainable society’, supports the UK in growing its world-leading research and innovation in advanced materials. Extending across nine floors, the new £105m Royce Hub Building in Manchester will foster world-class collaborative research. In addition to existing facilities, the building will host £45m of new equipment in specialist laboratories supporting research as diverse as biomedical materials, digital fabrication and advanced metals processing.

We are seeking a Deputy Institute Safety Advisor to work with the Institute Safety Advisor in providing high quality advice, support and oversight of the day-to-day management of health, safety and compliance in the Institute. They will advise staff and students on health and safety issues, promote a culture of best practice, participate in delivering health and safety objectives, and facilitate compliance with relevant legislation and University policies.

The primary areas of responsibility will be the Henry Royce Institute’s Royce Hub Building (Royce) and the Photon Science Institute (PSI). The post holder will also be expected to share their knowledge, skills and best practices to assist different areas during periods of peak workload and provide cross-Faculty coverage as required. The role requires good communication and interpersonal skills to utilise effective relationships across the Institutes and the wider Faculty and University communities.

The post holder will have excellent organisational skills and the capacity to work accurately and flexibly. They will have practical experience of managing science and engineering hazards and of conducting risk assessments, including COSHH and DSEAR.  A relevant health and safety qualification (IOSH Managing Safely, or equivalent) is essential, as is knowledge of health, safety and compliance regulations and an up-to-date awareness of safe working practices applicable to the scientific disciplines in the Institutes.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
