Job Description

Manchester has played a pivotal role in the development of science, technology and medicine. Many individuals and institutions involved in these fields were associated with predecessors of the University of Manchester. As a result, the University Library’s Special Collections holds significant printed and archival collections relating to the history of science, technology and medicine (STM).

We are seeking to appoint a Curator (Rare Books) to manage and develop access to these print collections; to encourage academic engagement with them; and to develop strategies for improving access to the collections across the academic community and with public audiences.

You will be a graduate with a professional qualification in librarianship or similar. You will have recent experience of cataloguing and/or managing rare books cataloguing; have excellent communication and team-working skills; and be committed to the use of Special Collections for research, teaching and, learning, and public engagement with research.

The Library's Special Collections are among the richest holdings of rare books, manuscripts, archives, maps and visual collections in the world and are an outstanding resource. The collections are housed on three sites – the John Rylands Research Institute & Library, Main Library on the University campus and the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE at Manchester Central Library. Through the John Rylands Research Institute, we deliver an extensive programme of research on the collections, in collaboration with academic colleagues at the University.

Please consider this before applying for this role.
