The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) is the UK’s national centre for advanced materials research and innovation. With its Hub at The University of Manchester, Royce has spokes at ten other institutions around the UK. The £235m institute grows the UK’s world-leading research and innovation base in advanced materials science, an area which is fundamental to all industrial sectors and the national economy. Royce plays a coordinating role in building collaboration, providing access to world-class facilities, and fostering skills development and best practice in science. As part of a materials informatics (materials 4.0) initiative we are seeking two “data curators”, for 1 year in the first instance, to help drive a change in culture in UK materials science towards better, more open practice in the storage and use of data.
As a successful candidate for one of these posts you will be an enthusiastic advocate for open science with an understanding of the benefits that proper storage and sharing of research data, in accordance with FAIR principles, can bring. You will enjoy the challenge of bridging between different communities, in this case between academic researchers, industrial partners, IT professionals and other potential stakeholders (e.g. government and the general public).
You might have a background in building or managing databases, or experience of building software tools to facilitate access to data. Equally, your expertise might lie in managing the infrastructure required for good data stewardship or in helping others to use existing tools for data management. We are looking for a combination of such skills and experience across the two successful candidates and will be flexible in how we build the team.
Materials science is at the beginning of a significant cultural shift and we look forward to welcoming you to the Royce team in our efforts that will accelerate materials discovery and translation to manufacture.
As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
