Job Description

The University of Manchester Library is one of only five National Research Libraries and the third largest academic library in the UK. Our vast and rich collections (print, electronic, and increasingly digital) help us to deliver a world-class library and information service for the University of Manchester. While our primary objective is to meet the teaching, learning and research needs of University members, we are also fully committed to widening access to our services to individual researchers, local schools and others in the regional community.

We are looking to recruit a Metadata Curation Assistant to join the Digital Metadata team within the Collection Strategies Directorate. The primary focus of this role is to support the incorporation of new content into the Library Management Systems, to ensure their discovery and accessibility. With an enthusiasm for data integrity, you will be expected to contribute towards collaborative solutions for improved metadata and quality customer driven solutions. You will require excellent data curation skills, a keen eye for accuracy and detail, and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively and collaboratively with the wider directorate and other Library colleagues to maintain optimum workflows which ensure high throughput of core digital content. Key responsibilities include the curation and maintenance of metadata in the University of Manchester Library’s digital collections including research publications, data, and theses.

The Metadata and Discovery Team has a flexible, service-oriented approach to supporting workload, and you will support all aspects of the team’s work, with training provided where necessary. We are therefore looking for someone who meets the essential criteria in the job description as well as an ability and willingness to develop their metadata-creation and cataloguing skills.

You will need to demonstrate the ability to work accurately, quickly and with attention to detail, showing excellent metadata and data curation skills. In your application, please address each of the criteria in the person specification in turn and supply examples of how you meet them.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons and all appointments will be made on merit. As we are committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter Mark, we would particularly welcome applications from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community who are currently under-represented at this level in this area.
