Job Description

The Manchester Institute of Innovation Research is seeking to employ a Research Associate to join its team for 11 months. The Research Associate will be employed as part of a joint project titled: “Place-based innovation strategies and entrepreneurial ecosystems” between the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR), the Manchester Urban Institute (MUI) and the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), and in collaboration with partners at the University of Toronto (the Munk School’s Innovation Lab and the School of Cities) and the University of Melbourne (Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute and Centre for Cities).

The project seeks to advance our understanding of how place-based ‘innovation districts’ generate new forms of impact and relationships in city-regions. Specifically, it aims to address the following questions: How do we understand, measure success and coordinate efforts in university-related innovation districts? What roles might universities play in the governance of innovation districts?

The researcher will join a multi-disciplinary team of economists, science policy scholars, higher education specialists, urban planners and geographers. Work will involve detailed document analysis, stakeholder analysis, participant observations in events and meetings, and in-depth interviews, and will focus mainly on Greater Manchester though with some possibility of travel. The successful applicant will also help to support the project partnership more generally, including managing project-related workshops or engagement events.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent (or be near to completion) in a relevant social science or humanities subject area and will ideally have experience in researching the local and regional dimensions of innovation, the roles of universities in urban innovation ecosystems, urban experimentation and/or responsible and inclusive innovation.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
