About the role:

We are currently looking for a Research Associate to join the ACED Early Detection team within the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC). The aim of this post is to support to help develop and apply a translational program in genomics and transcriptomics in hereditary cancers amenable to early detection.

In 2019 Manchester was awarded funding for a new programme of Early Detection research: MCRC/Manchester Early Recognition of Cancer and Decision Options (MERCADO), which is part of Cancer Research UK’s International Cancer Early Detection Alliance. The Alliance is a new five year £55m initiative established in 2019 by Cancer Research UK bringing together expertise from five world leading universities in the UK (University of Manchester, Cambridge University, University College London and the USA (Stanford and Oregon Health and Science University).

The successful applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary team within the Alliance of Cancer Early Detection (ACED) and biobanking teams that collect rare samples across two large UK Trusts (Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester Foundation Trust). The successful applicant will be responsible for genomic and bioinformatic characterisation of primary and/or metastatic tumours, and early-stage lesions, that arise from patients with hereditary DDRsyndromes, for examples, those of homologous recombination repair deficiency, Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, congenital mismatch repair defects and Lynch Syndrome. 

The position will involve working with a wide range of academic, clinical, managerial and administrative staff throughout The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Foundation Trust CRUK Manchester Institute and Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH), University of Manchester. The post will be hosted at the University of Manchester and based at the Oglesby Cancer Research Building.

This position is funded by CRUK through the International Alliance of Cancer Early Detection.

About you:

You should have a PhD or equivalent in oncology, molecular biology or genomics and have experience in defining and solving research questions in relation to the project.

Key qualities should include relevant laboratory experience, ability to take initiative, ability to work in a team and good communication skills, all of which are needed to efficiently work in a multidisciplinary team.
