Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Technical Specialist to join our dynamic technical operations team, which strives to provide a sector leading technical support for FSE and the wider University. With a commitment to customer service excellence and a passion for science and engineering, the Technical Specialist (Software Engineering for Robotic Systems) will provide an agile technical support service for the CRADLE Prosperity Partnership.

The University of Manchester has recently established the Manchester Centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence and is a recognised lead in the development of robots for extreme environments, particularly nuclear. The Technical Specialist (Robotics) will be located in Manchester to support the recently awarded EPSRC Prosperity Partnership: Centre for Robotic Autonomy in Demanding and Long-lasting Environments (CRADLE). CRADLE is a collaborative programme with Jacobs involving approximately 20 researchers from The University of Manchester and a similar number of engineers from Jacobs. The primary aim of CRADLE is to develop novel technologies that will allow autonomous robots to be reliably deployed in demanding environments, such as space, nuclear and urban infrastructure, for long lengths of time.

Key aspects of this role will include:

  • Providing expert advice and support for academics, researchers, Jacobs employees, and students within CRADLE engaged with robotic, AI, or autonomous systems projects.
  • Working with CRADLE participants to develop robust, reliable, and safe robotic systems.
  • Engaging with research and development within the University and within Jacobs on robotic, AI, or autonomous systems software technologies and their applications.
  • Providing a point of contact and expert support for robotics-related software development issues from academics, Jacobs collaborators, researchers, or students within CRADLE.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
