Job Description

To further strengthen our research and teaching portfolio the Department wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Political Theory.

The successful candidate will be based in MANCEPT (the Manchester Centre for Political Theory), one of five research clusters in the Department. MANCEPT is an internationally leading research hub in analytical political theory, with members having strong shared interests in social justice and markets, global justice and equality, Just War Theory, republicanism, nationalism and migration, feminism, and justice within the family. We welcome applications from scholars with one or more of these research interests as well as from applicants who would allow the cluster to expand its agenda. MANCEPT members have been recipients of a number of important grants in recent years (from the AHRC; the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust; The Independent Social Research Foundation; and the Mind Association among others). MANCEPT also hosts the annual MANCEPT Workshops in Political Theory – one of the largest political theory conferences in the world which brings in additional income to the cluster to fund events – and the annual Brave New World Postgraduate conference. The cluster sits within the larger Department of Politics, whose research strengths are reflected, among other things, in the 2021 REF in which the Department was placed 8th out of 56 in the UK on Grade Point Average (GPA), 5th on publications and 3rd on 4* publications.

Applicants must have a relevant PhD and demonstrate the ability to produce high quality internationally excellent publications, meet flexible curricular and teaching needs, and demonstrate capability to contribute organisationally to the wider School community.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
