Job Description

This is an exceptional opportunity to join the University of Manchester’s leading activities in Computer Engineering and Architecture.   The University is investing heavily for the future, with focus on areas of national importance such as health, security, smart cities, robotics, and data-intensive sciences such as physics, astronomy and biology.  The Department of Computer Science is investing for growth in Computer Engineering and Architecture, as the enabling activity for these areas, and more.   As a member of staff you will contribute to our international portfolio of research in Advanced Processor Technologies (APT), informed by real-world applications, and be willing to engage across discipline boundaries to apply your work.  We are seeking to make one appointment in the area of biologically-inspired computing to take forwards the work with the SpiNNaker team in the EU Human Brain Project and beyond.

You will join the Advanced Processor Technologies group – www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/apt - though be part of the wider pan-university community.  There are activities across the University that are potential collaborators for work in the APT group, including Machine Learning (in the Department of Computer Science) and Cognitive Robotics (in Computer Science and Electrical and Electronic Engineering). In 2018 the University has joined the Alan Turing Institute, the UK national institute for AI and Data Science.  As a Manchester staff member you will be fully supported in application to become a Turing Fellow, with the benefits of facilitated collaboration with leading institutes across the UK.

The Department of Computer Science is a leading research institution, and values exceptional researchers.  You will publish to the highest standards, secure external research funding, pursue real-world impact, and contribute to the world-class PhD training programmes within the Department.

The Department values exceptional teachers. You will play a key role in maintaining our reputation as an institute of learning – designing and delivering innovative UG/PG topics, both in Computer Engineering and Architecture, and across the spectrum of Computer Science.  Exceptional teachers are encouraged to demonstrate this in their application.

The School/Department is strongly committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for gender equality in higher education. The School/Department holds a Bronze Award for their good practice in relation to gender; including flexible working arrangements, family-friendly policies, and support to allow staff to achieve a god work-life balance.
