Job Description

The University of Manchester’s School of Physics and Astronomy (particle physics group) leads the European Commission Horizon 2020 European Training Network, “SMARTHEP”, Synergies between Machine learning, Real Time analysis and Hybrid architectures for efficient Event Processing and decision making. This project coordinates the research and training programmes of eleven academic partners and two industrial partners in the UK, Sweden, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Finland, Switzerland and Italy. The Particle Physics group at the University of Manchester has a vacancy for a Project Manager for this Network.

The role of the SMARTHEP Network Project Manager will support the achievement of the aims and objectives of this Training Network through the provision of dedicated administrative support to the programme coordinator Prof. Caterina Doglioni and project partners.

The successful candidate will deliver efficient and effective administrative and financial management of the project. They be responsible for communication to the stakeholders, including being the first point of contact between the network and the European Commission Project Officer in Brussels. They will aid with network policy, financial matters and reporting. They will be expected to organise and attend network meetings both remotely and at locations across Europe. This post will be closely integrated into the Research Support Service Team in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The positions require an education to degree level or equivalent, and experience of managing large, externally funded research projects, preferably EU-funded.

The candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written). They will be accustomed to managing budgets and using EU reporting tools. They will be proficient in the preparation of meeting agendas and be willing to learn to use the online tools employed by the network. They will have experience in chairing meetings, leading discussions, taking meeting notes and delivering concise meeting minutes. The candidate must be willing to travel overseas for short periods of time for network events.

The position will be for a period of 33 months until the conclusion of the last reporting period of the network, at 50% FTE. The position will be based at Manchester. The appointment will be from February 1st 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.
