Job Description

The Department of Social Anthropology seeks to appoint a Research Associate in History and Philosophy of Science for six years, to conduct research in Northeast Russia as part of a multidisciplinary team, under the leadership of Dr Olga Ulturgasheva on a six-year project “Cosmological Visionaries: Shamans, Scientists and Climate Change at the Ethnic Borderlands of China and Russia” funded by the European Research Council Synergy Grant. A PhD in history and philosophy of science, experience of conducting research focusing on Russia/Siberia, good command of Russian language as well as a demonstrable ability to produce world-class research are essential for the post. S/he will join Manchester-based ‘Russia team’ and will be expected to conduct four months of qualitative interview-based research each year on natural scientific approaches to climate change in Northeast Siberia, to participate in project workshops and conferences, and to publish original works on climate change in the history and philosophy of science.

This research role will involve the following set of activities:
• Co-authoring journal articles and edited volumes
• Single authoring one research monograph
• Carrying out annual fieldwork in Siberia
• Conducting interviews with regional experts in forestry, indigenous knowledge holders and scientists
• Establishing a network of environmental experts and policy makers
• Reporting on the project findings
• Analysing qualitative and quantitative data
• Participating in workshop and conferences
