Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious PhD graduate (or graduate with equivalent post-graduate technical background) with expertise in Machine Learning and Text Mining/NLP as well as software development experience, and with the ability and confidence to manage a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with Thornton & Lowe Ltd.

The University of Manchester and Thornton & Lowe are looking to recruit a Postdoc Data  Scientist to undertake this 30 month project. The project has the overall aim of developing and launching a smart tender scan & support product using state-of-the-art information retrieval techniques enhanced by recent advances in natural language processing, machine learning, incorporating information summarisation and visualisation to enhance functionality and usability.

The position will provide the successful candidate with a unique opportunity to work on and manage an industrial project, and obtain valuable commercial experience. It will provide the opportunity to apply and improve state-of-the-art data management, retrieval, visualisation and prediction techniques to address a cutting edge business problem which has a high level of commercial applicability. The successful applicant will be expected to lead and develop the technical aspects of the project and progressively contribute to the commercial context of the product development and of the company. The package includes a professional development and training budget up to £5,000 per year. The further benefit includes the opportunity of a permanent position with the company, as 70% of host companies for KTP projects make a permanent job offer to their Associate at the end of the project.

Candidates will require a first-class BSc/BEng and a PhD degree in machine learning and/or text mining/natural language processing, and with application experience relevant to text information retrieval, prediction modelling or decision making. However, candidates who can demonstrate strong and relevant commercial experience with a Master’s degree which substitutes for a PhD could be considered.

This post is funded through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) award, a UK Government scheme intended to promote sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry.

Based at Thornton & Lowe Ltd, Bolton, the successful candidate will work directly with supervisors from both the University and Thornton & Lowe and will use the facilities and resources of both organisations.

Due to the nature of the funding, KTP Associates who have already completed a KTP are not eligible to apply.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments will be made on merit.

Blended working arrangements may be considered
