Job Description

Manchester Mathematics Research Fellowship

Applications are invited for the above post, which is a three-year research position in mathematics, to start in August 2021, or at another mutually agreed date. We are looking for an outstanding and ambitious mathematician early in their career, who is seeking a friendly, supportive and collegial environment in which to develop. Applicants should normally have less than three years of research experience since their PhD, with allowances for career breaks, by the closing date for applications.

Applicants are sought in any area of mathematics that complements and extends existing research activity within the Department of Mathematics. The Fellow is expected to have their own independent research programme, but an important aspect of this position is an association with a current member of staff within the Department, whose research interests are closely aligned to those of the applicant, and who will act as a mentor.

The Fellow’s primary duties will be conducting high quality research, but they will be expected to contribute towards the rich research life of Department of Mathematics and to undertake some limited teaching, where appropriate for career development. Substantial funds will be available to support research and travel expenses. Fellows will also be encouraged to spend time on activities and initiatives to promote equality and diversity in mathematics, and achievements in this area will be fully recognised.

Applications must be made online. Please append a research statement, which should be at most 2 sides of A4 excluding references to your CV. The statement must include the name of a current member of staff at the Department of Mathematics who has agreed to act as mentor for the duration of the Fellowship, with a brief justification of your choice of this person.

The Department and University are committed to the well-being and work-life balance of all staff. We have a package of family-friendly policies covering flexible working, career breaks and entitlement to paid maternity, paternity and adoption leave. For more details on these and other benefits see

The School is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting women’s careers in STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) in higher education. The School holds a Bronze Award for their commitment to the representation of women in the workplace and we particularly welcome applications from women for this post. All appointments will be made on merit.
