Applicants are invited to pursue a three-year postdoctoral appointment within the research group of Dr Michael L. Baker at the University of Manchester. This exciting project will apply modern synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy techniques to measure and advance understanding of actinide electronic structure, bonding and magnetism. The project will involve the use of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements performed at Diamond Light Source, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and Synchrotron Soleil. The selected candidates’ responsibilities will involve the management of experiment proposals and beamtime, including the handling air sensitive actinide samples for measurement and leading experiments in collaboration with facility staff and other research group members. Data analysis and interpretation will involve the application and development of the latest theoretical methods.
Previous experience with X-ray absorption, XMCD or RIXS is desired. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in applying DFT, CASSCF or atomic multiplet theory for the rationalization of electronic structure and simulation of X-ray spectra. You must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics or a closely related subject. This project provides an opportunity to acquire leading expertise in the rapidly developing area of high energy resolution X-ray spectroscopies.
