Job Description

The Whitworth, part of the University of Manchester, is looking for a new Head of Collections and Exhibitions to join us at an exciting point in the gallery’s transformation, as we embark on a new chapter of our history.

For the last three years the gallery has been evolving a new mission and vision as a cultural institution dedicated to the use of art in processes of social change. This has been given added focus and renewed urgency during a global pandemic, a moment that has exposed many inequalities and injustices, renewing our ambition to establish the Whitworth as a place for people and ideas, to generate collective solutions, imbued with care and consideration.

We are looking for a someone to bring drive and enthusiasm to join the team at leadership level and help lead the organisation into an ever more relevant and people focussed future. Someone who will bring diversity of experience and knowledge, and a determination to collaboratively build an innovative, inclusive and puroposeful programme aligned to our values and vision.

You will play a significant role in advancing our work and passion around art and culture in a social context and support the active role museums play within Anti-racist action, social justice, decolonisation, access and accessibility, environmental sustainability, and health and education.

If you are excited by what we could create together, we’d love to hear for you.

We are proud of and actively celebrate Manchester’s rich diversity and believe our teams should reflect our communities and visitors. Be that age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual orientation. Simply, we have a deep belief that inclusion and diversity create a more inspiring environment to work, where people are treated with respect and can be comfortable being themselves.

We provide adjustments for individuals during the recruitment process and flexibility throughout your working career so you can be at your best.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
